Condensed fonts are a practical font style that allows for space to be used efficiently. Some of the most common condensed fonts are Impact, Microgramma, Microtype, Courier New, and Courier Next. Condensed fonts have excellent legibility due to their short horizontal stems. They have less spacing between letters than standard face but more than extended typefaces like Archer Black or Arial Black. This makes them somewhat difficult to read at small sizes but readable quickly at large sizes. Condensed fonts work well for headlines, short documents, and other uses where space is a premium. This makes them a good choice for logos and special characters since their legibility makes them very communicative. On mobile devices Condense fonts look best when used at a wide size range, typically from 16px to 30px or higher. At small sizes condensed fonts can be hard to read due to the limited spacing between letters. However at larger sizes condensed faces perform very well due to their tight spacing and limited letter forms.A condensed font is one which has been made smaller in order to fit more words on a single line of text without resorting to using multiple lines of text or creating a very lengthy word. The actual term "condensed font" has become a misnomer when the concept of condensed fonts has been expanded to include other typefaces without narrowing the definition to condensing everything down. To many web fonts are not condensed, but are referred to simply by their type size. Condensed font types are also referred to as "mini fonts", in both common and technical usage. The design of a condensed font is generally based on one or more of these principles: the use of thin strokes in order to create strong vertical lines; strong horizontal lines with thin space in between; and, often, thick curves to create round-edged letters. Condensed fonts are not as tall as normal fonts, but they still have to be tall enough to be easily read. As with all typefaces, the width of a condensed font is measured by how wide it is. A condensed font can be either condensed horizontally (i.e., the letters are made thinner) or condensed vertically (the letters are made taller). Some older model newsprint printers are unable to print narrower than 24-point type even though they are able to print at smaller point sizes. These printers print regular 24-point type condensed by scaling it down 33%. This gives an effective size of about 18 points. The original version of Impact (non-condensed) was created by Donald Knuth in 1982. The font includes character elements that resemble woven metalwork, such as an "S" that is formed from a single line and an "A" with several lines of equally sized contour. Other designers have since used the same principle to create fonts such as Utopia and Bitstream Vera Sans Mono, both designed by David Berlow. Some modern typefaces use the condensed form for all-capital letters, e.g. Impact Condensed Bold Condensed and Verdana Condensed Bold Condensed at Adobe Systems for web browsers and screen devices with limited screen space such as smartphones. cfa1e77820
